What retatrutide is and its status
Retatrutide is an investigational peptide of about 4.7 kDa developed by Eli Lilly. It is in late-stage clinical trials, and Lilly has said it expects to submit for approval in the first quarter of 2027. Until FDA approves it, no product is an approved retatrutide drug, and a vial from a research supplier is not the same thing as Lilly’s clinical material.
That has two consequences for a buyer. There is no regulated retail supply to compare against, so the quality of a research vial rests on the seller’s testing and honesty. And FDA has been explicit about enforcement. In a warning letter dated August 24, 2026, it rejected a seller’s “research use only” disclaimers and treated the seller’s own product statements as evidence that the products were intended as drugs. What testing has found in online retatrutide
Two sources show how much a label can hide.
In a 2026 paper in Drug and Alcohol Review, Piatkowski and colleagues sent three products sold as retatrutide and labelled 10 mg to an accredited laboratory. All three contained a molecule whose measured mass closely matched the expected 4730.477 Da. The measured content was 5.13 mg (51.3% of the label), 16.5 mg (165%) and 19.0 mg (190%). The authors did not assess sterility or endotoxin, and three samples is a small study. It still shows that the right molecule at the wrong amount happens.
A 2026 preprint by Mendias and Awan analyzed 6,441 samples of 14 gray market peptides, including retatrutide, from a public independent testing dataset. Depending on the quality model, 41.6% to 71.1% of samples failed basic quality criteria, and measurable endotoxin was present in 15%. It has not been peer reviewed.
Neither study describes Peptryn’s lots. They describe what an unchecked label is worth, which is why the checks below matter.

1. A lot-specific report from an independent lab

2. Identity by mass spectrometry
For retatrutide the expected mass is about 4730.477 Da. A large peptide like this usually appears at several charge states in a mass spectrum, and the report converts them to one mass. Ask to see expected and measured mass side by side. A mass match supports identity but does not confirm the sequence.
3. Purity, read as a peak table

4. Quantity, compared with the label
This is the line the 2026 study found most variable. A report gives a measured amount per vial. Compare it with the labelled amount, and ask what reference standard the lab calibrated against and what basis the result is on. If a lot’s figure raises a question, ask the seller before relying on the label.
5. Endotoxin, and what it does not cover
A negative endotoxin result means bacterial endotoxin was not detected at the test’s limit. It does not show that a vial is sterile. 6. The lab’s accreditation scope
Ask which tests are on the lab’s ISO/IEC 17025 scope. Accreditation covers only what the scope lists.
7. Clear research-use terms
A legitimate research supplier states that products are for laboratory research only. It does not describe effects on people, give amounts to take, or talk about results for a person.
8. A seller that answers lot questions
The test is simple: can you get the report for the lot you hold, and does someone reply?
Red flags when you compare sellers
A short list separates careful sellers from careless ones.
Watch for effect claims about what a compound does in people, dosing tables, protocols, and language about results. Those are marks of a seller treating the product as a drug, and FDA has cited effect claims as evidence of intended use. Also watch for a purity number with no method, a certificate with no lot number, a report that lives only as an image on the seller’s own site, no mass spectrometry, and words like “pharmaceutical grade” or “licensed” that come with no source you can check.
