Description

Glutathione (GSH, γ-glutamylcysteinylglycine) is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant tripeptide in mammalian cells, comprising the amino acids glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It functions as the central hub of cellular redox balance, serving as a co-substrate for glutathione peroxidases, glutathione S-transferases, and glutaredoxins, while also playing essential roles in xenobiotic detoxification, protein thiol protection, and immune cell function.

Preclinical research into glutathione spans multiple disciplines including oxidative stress biology, hepatology, immunology, and neuroscience. Studies have examined its depletion in models of liver toxicity, neurodegenerative disease, and aging; its role in mitochondrial function and maintenance of the NAD+/NADH ratio; and the downstream effects of GSH supplementation on oxidative stress biomarkers, inflammatory signalling, and cellular viability in various tissue models. Glutathione research is fundamental to understanding redox biology and its intersection with metabolic and age-related disease processes.
