Description

SS-31, also known as Elamipretide or MTP-131, is a mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide with the sequence D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2. Unlike most antioxidant compounds, SS-31 selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane where it binds to cardiolipin — a critical phospholipid essential for maintaining the structural integrity of electron transport chain complexes and supporting efficient ATP synthesis. This targeted mechanism makes SS-31 one of the most important mitochondria-focused research peptides currently available.

Preclinical research into SS-31/Elamipretide has examined its effects across a wide range of disease models including cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury, skeletal muscle mitochondrial dysfunction, renal injury, neurodegenerative disease models, and age-related mitochondrial decline.
