Description

MOTS-C is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the 12S rRNA region of the mitochondrial genome, making it one of a small class of peptides that originate from mitochondrial DNA rather than nuclear DNA. Discovered in 2015, MOTS-C has rapidly emerged as one of the most important research peptides in mitochondrial biology, metabolic regulation, and longevity science.

Preclinical research into MOTS-C has examined its roles in insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, AMPK activation, fatty acid oxidation, and exercise adaptation. Animal studies have demonstrated its ability to translocate to the nucleus in response to metabolic stress, where it regulates gene expression related to antioxidant defence and metabolic homeostasis.
